Unveiling the intricacies of Offset printing process

Unveiling the Intricacies of the Offset Printing Machine: A Closer Look at the Printing Process

In today’s digital era, where screens dominate our daily lives, it’s easy to overlook the intricacies of traditional printing processes. Yet, offset printing remains a staple method for producing high-quality, large-volume prints. This article aims to shed light on the fascinating world of offset printing machines and the step-by-step process they employ to bring your designs to life.

1. Understanding Offset Printing

Offset printing is a widely used commercial printing technique known for its efficiency, versatility, and exceptional print quality. It involves transferring ink from a metal plate to a rubber blanket before transferring it onto the final printing surface, typically paper. Offset printing machines, also called offset lithography machines, have revolutionized the industry due to their ability to handle large print runs with consistent results.

2. The Offset Printing Process

2.1. Prepress Preparation

Before the actual printing begins, several preparatory steps take place in the prepress phase. This involves converting digital or physical designs into plates that will be used in the printing process. The steps include:

  1. Design Preparation: The original design is prepared using computer software or traditional methods, ensuring it meets the desired specifications for printing.
  2. Plate Creation: The design is transferred onto metal plates, typically made of aluminum, using a photographic or computer-to-plate (CTP) process. Each plate represents one color in the final print.
  3. Plate Assembly: The plates are mounted onto a plate cylinder on the offset printing machine, with each cylinder corresponding to a specific ink color.

2.2. Ink and Water Balance

The key principle behind offset printing lies in the interaction between ink and water. The printing plate has areas that attract ink and repel water, while other areas attract water and repel ink. This balance is critical for achieving accurate and consistent prints.

  1. Fountain Solution Application: The fountain solution, a mixture of water and chemicals, is applied to the non-image areas of the plate, keeping them free from ink. It helps to maintain the delicate ink-water balance.
  2. Ink Application: Ink is applied to the ink rollers, which subsequently transfers it to the plate’s image areas. The ink adheres only to the areas that have been exposed by the plate’s image.

2.3. Image Transfer and Printing

Once the ink and water balance is established, the actual printing process begins:

  1. Blanket Cylinder Transfer: The inked image on the plate is transferred onto a rubber blanket cylinder. This cylinder provides a flexible surface that conforms to the texture of the final printing material.
  2. Paper Feeding: The paper is fed into the offset printing machine and guided through a series of rollers to ensure precise alignment and consistent movement.
  3. Image Transfer to Paper: As the paper passes through the press, it comes into contact with the rubber blanket cylinder, transferring the inked image onto the paper. This process is known as the offset, as the image is offset from the plate directly onto the paper.
  4. Drying and Finishing: After the image transfer, the printed sheets pass through drying units to accelerate ink drying. Subsequently, finishing processes such as cutting, folding, or binding may be employed, depending on the desired end product.

Conclusion

The offset printing machine stands as a testament to the remarkable blend of art and technology that fuels the world of traditional printing. From the meticulous prepress preparation to the precise ink-water balance and the image transfer onto the final printing material, each step in the offset printing process contributes to the creation of exceptional prints.

Despite the rise of digital alternatives, the offset printing machine continues to be a reliable choice for commercial printing, ensuring high-quality results and efficient production of large print runs.

Importance of fonts and colors on Packaging

Importance of fonts and colors on Packaging

Importance of fonts and colors in packaging

Putting in place all the unique ideas and designs for a packaging box is never easy. A long list of requirements has to be checked in and out several times. While doing so, not only big but consideration of tiny aspects is required. You might create a logo of your dreams.  But if you don’t pick the right font shape, size, and color for it, the logo might not engage the crowd. In this article, we are going to share some important tips that can change your packaging game for once and all. This article will cover some simple but most important interpretations about packaging.

Go easy with crazy

Everybody wants packaging which is as unique as their product. Adding some bright colors and funky designs might do the trick. At the same time, playing with crazy designs and color shades is a long shot. Implementation of both aspects should be done in moderation. For example, a crazy clown face on the top of the packaging will look dull with plain boring colors. But at the same time, too many bright colors will also not touch the mark.

Let us understand this in detail with the below images. Airborne chewable and bubble gum, both have unique and unconventional color, designs on their packaging. While comparing the two, we can see the packaging of airborne chewable even with neon green and mustard color, is more attractive. Why?

This is because the designs printed on bubble gum candy boxes are cluttered. Too many designs and shapes engulfed into one another. Too many designs on a bright color background, are difficult to absorb by the human brain and eyes. Giving a non-attractive look to the box.

On the airborne boxes, a single funky face image is printed. This also leaves enough space for the product name and extra information to fit in. Hence, the quirky design attracts customer’s attention. And the clear design and printing provide info about the product all in one go.

Sometimes simple is complicated

Minimalism is the current trend in almost every field. Many big brands are using minimalist trends for their packaging. Minimalism is a means through which people can showcase their brand value with a few simple designs and colors. But getting it done right also requires a technique.

Both the pizza boxes below, have a simple design and colour printing done on top. Even with more designs and color, the square shape pizza box appears dull and unattractive. While the hexagonal pizza box of Quintal Fratelli, serve a classy look. Let us try to understand the difference between the two boxes.

Quintal Fratelli printed their design and brand name in black on a traditional brown color box. Below the brand name, the image of a single pizza slice with ingredients is printed. This helps in creating a make-believe concept. The concept being that food served at Quintal is authentic. To wind up their minimalist packaging in an attractive way, Quntail ditched the traditional box shape. Instead, they went with a hexagonal box. Hence providing a very modern look to the entire pizza box packaging.

While the square pizza box does not serve a minimalist look even with simple designs and logo. Two places with green colour background on a brown pizza box give an attractive look to the entire packaging. Even with minimalist design and colour, the square pizza failed to deliver it.

Do not use the same font

The font size on the packaging plays a very important role. Wrong font shape and size can take down the entire appearance of your packaging.

In the first image below, a plain brown box with printing is set out. The black-colored fonts on the top and side are the same. Some fonts are highlighted in bold while the rest are kept as it is. The same font on the box gives an attractive and complicated look to the packaging. Even with simple printing and plain colors, the box looks baffling due to the same fonts.

The Milka chocolate packaging used different fonts and the top and side. A different font to highlight their brand name. And a different font to highlight their product name. Two different fonts draw equal attention to both, brand name and product name. Not to forget, it also makes the packaging looking pretty clean and attractive.

The deceptive color combination

We often come across certain colors and they remind us of a particular product. For example, the purple color reminds us of Cadbury dairy milk, the red color reminds us of coca-cola and etc. . Colors help humans to remember a particular product easily, according to human psychology. Using particular colored fonts on packaging can help create deceptive packaging with little effort.

Here, for instance, there are two customized Chanel packaging boxes. The first box is a white background box with black fonts printed on top. This is a positive type of color scheme. Dark fonts on a light colored background, makes the box appear larger than the actual size. This color scheme can be used for small packaging boxes.

The second Chanel box is a black coloured box with white fonts. This is a negative type of colour scheme. Light fonts on a dark background, creates an illusion of enlarged fonts. It helps in focusing more attention on the font (in this case the brand name Chanel).

The Current State of Paper Industry in India

The Current State of Paper Industry in India

State of Paper industry in India 2021

Industries in India and all around the world were hit hard by the pandemic. After almost a year, between December 2020 and January 2021, the Indian small-scale and medium-scale industries experienced little growth. Several industries such as paper also moved along the higher growth rate on the graph. But from the last few months, i.e from mid-February 2021, the paper industry is again on a roll and is taking a descending fall.

Only when the paper industry started to cover the losses infused by the pandemic, it was hit hard again. This time due to a shortage of raw materials, Kraft paper in the market. The new laws implemented by the Chinese ministry of environment is one of the major reasons leading to the downfall of the paper industry in India. Late back in January 2018, china announced to block RCP(recovered paper) imports from the USA. USA was the highest RCP supplier to China, accounting for a total of 45% of RCP supply.  Right after announcing the blocking of the RCP import from the USA, china implemented new import laws. On December 23, 2019, the Chinese environmental ministry released 12 new batches of RCP import permits. According to fast markets risi, the permit covers a total of 11 million tonnes of import. And most of the imports are given to large mills, producing recycled packaging paper and board.

current state of paper industry in india

After the new ban and permit laws, the Chinese paper industry is highly dependent on imports. With almost a 90% ban on paper recycling and manufacturing,  most of the paper mills are highly reliant on imports. According to the Chinese Paper Association, Chinese pulp producers survived the entire 2020 on an edge, forcing many producers to shut down their mills.

The government of India, gave a green flag to allow a huge import of RCP and paper board to china. After the new import laws in china, India has been increasingly exporting paper waste and recycled paper to China. This situation has led to an extreme scarcity of paper board and RCP. This shortage is forcing the manufacturers and traders and people involved in the paper industry, to increase the rates for their customers. Customers not knowing the back theory of price rise, are not complying with the increasing rates. This has created a huge dent in the entire paper industry.

Owners of major paper mills and people involved in the paper industry raised an alarm in the last few months, alerting the Indian government about the factors that could leave irreparable damage in the Indian paper industry. Many paper and paper packaging associations from all over India wrote letters to the ministries seeking government intervention that could provide them relief. But the government is yet to take any action on this. Paper manufacturers association (IPMA) in their letter to the union ministry of commerce and industry, pointed out that countries like and china and other Asian countries have cheap access to the raw materials from India. Their countries also provide them with incentive and subsidies for their business. India providing them with zero or preferable import duties, make the Indian manufacturers incur losses in the domestic market. The association also suggested allowing imports only on the basis of an actual usual license.

Several Indian ministers have also raised worries surrounding the fall of the paper industry. According to the business standard, the standing committee of commerce tabled a report regarding this in the Rajya sabha. The committee in their report emphasised the economic disturbance in the Indian GDP and especially in industrial manufacturing due to Chinese imports. The business standard also stated there is a tremendous increase in India’s export to china between the year 2017-2018. During the year, 2007-08, India’s export to China was $2.5 billion, whereas, in 2017-18, it was $50 billion!

On a positive note, some stakeholders are predicting that the paper industry might return to normal by the last quarter of this year.

The food industry is an everyday changing market. To walk along with food trends and food habits, packaging trends are also changing. The current wave of change in packaging is due to the change in snacking habits. Three major consumer demands are making around in the markets pushing for packaging switches.

Clean label trend

The clean label trend is popular because of the transparency of added ingredients and nutrients provided to consumers. According to the transparency imperative 2018 study, 74% ( seven in ten shoppers) of consumers say they will switch brands if they get thorough information about the product. A sharp rise of 74% is registered in the Asia Pacific in the clean label market, making Asia Pacific the fastest growing market for clean label packaging in the world.

While creating a clean label packaging, it is important to plan the list of ingredients and different nutritional value your snack provides. Your clean label packaging should make the consumers feel that the snack they are eating is hygienic and healthy. This in return helps to create trust between the consumers and your brand.

 Portion control packaging

Consumers are more conscious of the food they consume. More and more inclination towards a fit and healthy life is forcing businesses to provide a portion control packaging. Portion control packaging serves an idea that whatever a person is eating, is in a finite amount.

Portion control packaging is more famous amongst bakers. A single pastry piece accounts more sales than an entire cake. Portion control packaging if done right, can sell existing food in larger quantities. Pringle chips, Doritos, Coca-cola introduced a 100 calorie packaging based on the same concept.

According to the Institute of Grocery distribution, consumers also wanted a simplified explanation of portion size. And needed the packaging to look full in order to feel they were gaining value for their dollar.

Keeping it fresh and re-closable

Not just healthy and hygienic, consumers want their snacks fresh and their packaging compatible. Consumers who are constantly occupied with their work and a busy schedule, demand a packaging that keeps their snack fresh and one which is easy to re-close after grabbing a few bites.

Hershey’s introduced a packaging based on this trend for their Hershey’s waffle layer crunch cones.
