Paper Packaging vs Plastic packaging

Paper Packaging vs Plastic packaging

In this article, we will discuss the crux of paper packaging vs plastic packaging

Ongoing trends in paper packaging vs plastic packaging

With the ongoing trend and more government restrictions, the survival of plastic in the packaging industry is on a brink!
The many benefits of paper and paper products over plastic, are well known to everyone.
Paper and paper products being more nature and user friendly, the graph of ongoing demand for paper packaging is only rising stable high.
The plastic manufacturers and users are facing everyday difficulties due to very low market demand and supply chain.
The market scenario changes every day depending on the user demands.
The current market scenarios are pushing in for more paper packed products because of consumer awareness about the ill effects of the plastic.
Also, with the rising environmental issues about the use of plastic, the government authorities all around the world are putting larger restrictions on plastic products.
Not only plastic but the banning of certain other products like thermocol is also considered by the authorities.
The government of all major economies is encouraging the use of paper packed products.
Resulting in a negligible consumption of plastic products.

The appearance of paper packaging vs plastic packaging

Talking about the appearance of the packaging, paper packed products hold higher ground as compared to the plastic.
The finishing and desired color output on the package can earn wings only with the use of paper.
Paper packaging provides an easier base for a detailed description of the product if you desire to.
Giving an attractive outer representation to the consumer about the product holds a clear possibility with the use of paper.
Paper provides a smooth base for implementing complicated designs. This particular property, plastic fails to deliver.
Also, some plastics do not allow the right shade of color to appear on the final package bag.
Hence, paper packed products are very much suitable if one wants to draw ideas with the perfect color and shape on their packed products and make a hit with more consumers.

There are particular paper categories adopted by the industries which are being put to use more. They are:

1) Kraft paper

2) Duplex board

3) SBS board

Let’s take a look at each of the above-mentioned categories in detail.

Kraft paper

  • When we talk about the strength and durability of the paper, kraft paper outstands all the available paper categories.
  • Due to its high resistance strength, kraft paper emerges as a suitable contender to provide a protective layer.
  • Such a protective layer helps protect the items of the box when they are being packed and shipped.
  • The production of kraft paper takes place from recycled waste, making it chemical-free, unlike plastic.
  • While plastic production comes to pass with the use of lots of toxic chemicals, making it very harmful for human use.
  • Making of gift wraps, school book covers, and high-quality boxes require the use of kraft paper.

Duplex board

  • This paper category provides a water-resistant surface and is also used to provide a glossy sheen to the package.
  • It also provides a clean printing surface, making it easier to print fancy designs on the package.
  • The usability of duplex board paper is more in producing garment and shoeboxes and also medicine boxes.

SBS board

  • With a low stiffness ratio, SBS paper provides a very flexible surface to customize and to work with.
  • The most important benefit of the SBS board is that it has no smell to it, making it suitable for cosmetic and pharmaceutical packaging. SBS makes a good choice for high-speed printing.
  • Whereas any plastic category does not provide a good surface to do a high-speed printing of several designs and drawings.

paper packaging vs plastic packaging
The graphical pie chart shows the marketing share of different packaging materials in the food packaging industry.

As this pie chart depicts, paper and board packaging hold the largest market share of 34 percent for packaging material while rigid plastic holds a market share of 27 percent.

The market share of plastic packaging has been on a decline over the years while the market share of paper and paper board packaging has been increasing due to eco-friendly government policies.

Paper Packaging Industry after COVID-19

Paper Packaging Industry after COVID-19

In this article, we will discuss the paper packaging industry after COVID-19

In this time of crisis, no industry is immune to the deadly virus putting the paper packaging industry after COVID-19 at risk, the print industry in India in all its forms is around 46 thousand crores, in which offset printing holds around 27.5 crores.

If the lockdown continues for more than 4 weeks the estimated loss to the print industry would be around 4000 crores, while the offset industry would take a hit between 2300 to 2800 crore, making it one of the most vulnerable industries.

This loss will not only be in the production of business but also the cost incurred by days in which the employees have gone without work thus creating a sense of insecurity in the business as no clear bill has been introduced by the government or the banks for the print industry to bounce back.

As the saying goes “ Business has always been done with the exchange of money and material, the only thing that will change is the way of doing it.

As we have the opportunity to analyze and restructure our business, let’s do a SWOT analysis of the print industry in the current economic situation.

SWOT ANALYSIS

Strength

  • India has a great entrepreneurship ardor, much greater than other countries which will help us to stand back
  • We have the youngest and committed manpower in the world.
  • Availability of skilled and inexpensive labor force.
  • Prices of raw materials such as paper, inks, and chemicals are comparable to the world.
  • Land for industrial use is cheap in many states.

Weakness

  • Businesses are not ready to take risks in the present working scenario.
  • The rise in USD and EURO to INR is making the end-product costly as most of the machinery is imported in India.
  • The lack of certification and standardization is one of the major issues of the printing industry.
  • Only a few businesses in the print industry employ skilled or trained manpower.
  • Most MSME industries have the owners as CEO, which lacks certain skill sets to make a business model successful.

Opportunities

  • The print industry has to shift from the physical contact business to the internet order-taking business as more people will avoid physical contact to do business.
  • Export from India will increase as various countries will look for alternative destinations post-COVID-19.
  • Domestic collaboration is an important key to fight competition from bigger businesses.

Threats

  • If a permanent solution for COVID-19 is not found in a few months, the economic impact on the print industry would be irreparable.
  • There would be a significant increase in the demand and supply gap.
  • There would be an exponential increase in bank defaulters in the print industry if the banks don’t support the business.
  • Global vulnerability due to oil prices and the stock market would directly affect the cost of production.

Among all the uncertainties the paper packaging industry shows steady growth, the bar graph below shows the growth of the paper packaging industry.

(i.e. paper-carton board packaging industry, paper liner packaging industry, and other paper packaging type) for the years 2019, 2020, and 2021 respectively

As it depicts the paper packaging industry for the year 2019 was 1,28,926 crores which show an estimated growth of 8.5 percent taking it to 1,39,983 crores while the forecast of 2021 is 1,48,984 crores showing an increase of 6.5 percent.

Offset Printing Industry

Offset Printing Industry

The history of Offset printing goes back to the late 1970s. It was in Munich when a man named Alois Senefelder rubbed two stones together.

While the polishing slabs with the greasy substance on stones, an image formation took place. A clear image was then reproduced using fountain ink.

It was the accidental experiment of Alois that let to a revolution in the field of printing. The traditional name given to this method was Offset printing.

With the development of technology and sciences, several ways were then introduced to start offset printing.

Engineers started using Lithographic stones into action at first while printing and with the further developments aluminum plates replaced lithographic stones.

There are two different types of offset printing.

Sheet fed Offset Printing

In this type of printing, individual sheets are fed into the machine. This type of printing is often used in commercial printing and packaging printing.

Web Offset Printing

Larger rolls are printed using this particular type of offset printing. Web printing is largely used in printing newspapers.

Offset printing when compared to digital printing, has its benefits.

In traditional Offset printing, transferring of the image takes place through aluminum plates. The aluminum plates have a thick coating of photosensitive layers done on them.

Hence the result printed on the product is crisp and the exact implementation of the given original image is the exact result.

The right shade of color on the product is also delivered only with the Offset printing.

Offset printers consist of more than four units in a single series. It also consists of varnishing units, which makes color delivery according to the client’s needs possible.

On the other hand Digital printing does not deliver the right color because printing takes place through computerization.

Unlike the manual efforts used in offset printing.

The cost-effectiveness of Offset printing is also better than digital printing. Thus Printing in bulk using the offset printing technique is cheaper.

As the amount assigned to a single piece of the product decreases when the number of total printed products increases.

Also, the durability of offset printing is better than digital printing as it is because of the larger lifetime of the printing plates.

All Tech Printpack is an offset printing and packaging company, providing solutions to clients from various industries.
