Importance of fonts and colors in packaging
Putting in place all the unique ideas and designs for a packaging box is never easy. A long list of requirements has to be checked in and out several times. While doing so, not only big but consideration of tiny aspects is required. You might create a logo of your dreams. But if you don’t pick the right font shape, size, and color for it, the logo might not engage the crowd. In this article, we are going to share some important tips that can change your packaging game for once and all. This article will cover some simple but most important interpretations about packaging.
Go easy with crazy
Everybody wants packaging which is as unique as their product. Adding some bright colors and funky designs might do the trick. At the same time, playing with crazy designs and color shades is a long shot. Implementation of both aspects should be done in moderation. For example, a crazy clown face on the top of the packaging will look dull with plain boring colors. But at the same time, too many bright colors will also not touch the mark.
Let us understand this in detail with the below images. Airborne chewable and bubble gum, both have unique and unconventional color, designs on their packaging. While comparing the two, we can see the packaging of airborne chewable even with neon green and mustard color, is more attractive. Why?
This is because the designs printed on bubble gum candy boxes are cluttered. Too many designs and shapes engulfed into one another. Too many designs on a bright color background, are difficult to absorb by the human brain and eyes. Giving a non-attractive look to the box.
On the airborne boxes, a single funky face image is printed. This also leaves enough space for the product name and extra information to fit in. Hence, the quirky design attracts customer’s attention. And the clear design and printing provide info about the product all in one go.
Sometimes simple is complicated
Minimalism is the current trend in almost every field. Many big brands are using minimalist trends for their packaging. Minimalism is a means through which people can showcase their brand value with a few simple designs and colors. But getting it done right also requires a technique.
Both the pizza boxes below, have a simple design and colour printing done on top. Even with more designs and color, the square shape pizza box appears dull and unattractive. While the hexagonal pizza box of Quintal Fratelli, serve a classy look. Let us try to understand the difference between the two boxes.
Quintal Fratelli printed their design and brand name in black on a traditional brown color box. Below the brand name, the image of a single pizza slice with ingredients is printed. This helps in creating a make-believe concept. The concept being that food served at Quintal is authentic. To wind up their minimalist packaging in an attractive way, Quntail ditched the traditional box shape. Instead, they went with a hexagonal box. Hence providing a very modern look to the entire pizza box packaging.
While the square pizza box does not serve a minimalist look even with simple designs and logo. Two places with green colour background on a brown pizza box give an attractive look to the entire packaging. Even with minimalist design and colour, the square pizza failed to deliver it.
Do not use the same font
The font size on the packaging plays a very important role. Wrong font shape and size can take down the entire appearance of your packaging.
In the first image below, a plain brown box with printing is set out. The black-colored fonts on the top and side are the same. Some fonts are highlighted in bold while the rest are kept as it is. The same font on the box gives an attractive and complicated look to the packaging. Even with simple printing and plain colors, the box looks baffling due to the same fonts.
The Milka chocolate packaging used different fonts and the top and side. A different font to highlight their brand name. And a different font to highlight their product name. Two different fonts draw equal attention to both, brand name and product name. Not to forget, it also makes the packaging looking pretty clean and attractive.
The deceptive color combination
We often come across certain colors and they remind us of a particular product. For example, the purple color reminds us of Cadbury dairy milk, the red color reminds us of coca-cola and etc. . Colors help humans to remember a particular product easily, according to human psychology. Using particular colored fonts on packaging can help create deceptive packaging with little effort.
Here, for instance, there are two customized Chanel packaging boxes. The first box is a white background box with black fonts printed on top. This is a positive type of color scheme. Dark fonts on a light colored background, makes the box appear larger than the actual size. This color scheme can be used for small packaging boxes.
The second Chanel box is a black coloured box with white fonts. This is a negative type of colour scheme. Light fonts on a dark background, creates an illusion of enlarged fonts. It helps in focusing more attention on the font (in this case the brand name Chanel).
